Cape Cod Memories Spark A New Year's Plan

Happy New Year!

It's hard to believe 20 years have passed since Y2K was "a thing" and even more surprising how simple life seemed to be back in the year 2000 despite all of the technological distractions that were already available.  I relived a little of this sweet simplicity while watching some old family movies with my Dad in Ohio this past Christmas.  Some VERY LONG unedited footage was from a family walk on  West Dennis Beach in West Dennis, MA that included a successful round of kite flying.  Above the gusting wind that distorted our recorded voices, I could still make out squeals of laughter from my then, six-year-old niece, my mom calling after her, me laughing as I ran, fumbling movie camera in hand, dizzily capturing memories that danced in tune to the thumping of the wind.

These 20 year old family vacation movies sparked my resolve for the New Year and, for the upcoming new decade. Simplifying everything, wherever possible. Forming new memories with family and friends around simple activities that at one time brought a lot of contentment…without the distraction of cell phones and Facebook: playing numerous rounds of “Sorry” while being serenaded by crickets through the screened in porch. Strolling along the water’s edge and collecting shells from the start of the West Dennis beach to "the point” where the Bass River flows into Nantucket Sound. And, as an artistically inclined being, spending hours painting surface patterns for fabric…just because I loved to do it.

The time capsule of family moments were heartwarming, playful and engaging. These are the qualities I wish to capture and create through a fresh portfolio of art to share throughout 2020.

May your 2020 be full of health and personal growth!

What’s your plan to embrace simplicity?
